Porphyrin derivatives and their use as photosensitizer in photodynamic therapy

Cyclo-keto-tetraphenylporphyrins are second generation photosensitizer for use in photodynamic therapy. Those porphyrins are advantageous (a) in their good producibility, (b) in their relatively favourable solubility in organic as well as aqueous solutions and (c) in their absorption beyond the absorption range of blood. By suitable substitution of the functional groups and / or coupling to respective carrier molecules, the target specificity of the substances in the living organism can be enhanced. Surprisingly, some members of the mentioned molecule family demonstrated a triplett quantum yield of approx. 95% and a singulett oxygen quantum yield of approx. 90%, thus showing superiority to all presently known photosensitizers (usual quantum yields around 50%).
