Physicist wins Nobel Prize for Medicine 2003

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2003 has today been awarded to an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Sir Peter Mansfield from the University of Nottingham.

It was awarded jointly with Paul C. Lauterbur from the University of Illinois, for their discoveries concerning magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Peter Main, Director of Education and Science at the Institute of Physics, and former Head of Physics and Astronomy at Nottingham University, commented:

“The Institute of Physics is delighted that one of its Honorary Fellows, Professor Sir Peter Mansfield, has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine. Magnetic resonance imaging started out as curiosity driven physics research and has revolutionised the world of medicine. Professor Mansfield’’s work shows how important physics is in underpinning medicine and the rest of science.”
