Exoskeleton – Robotic Training Device

Background
An exoskeleton is an external body part that supports movements or protects the human body. Exoskeletons can be used as robotic training devices. Improved robotic orthosis (exoskeletons) with precise control are required for therapeutic purposes and for people with disabilities.

Technology
The invention is an exoskeleton using arc segments and a servomechanism for assisting limb movements. A leg exoskeleton prototype as well as a hand exoskeleton prototype was successfully tested. In the developed finger exoskeleton several arc segments can be linked with each other, therefore it is not necessary to fix each single finger phalanx to the exoskeleton.

Benefits:

Certified finger exoskeleton system

Successful clinical trials

Range of motion for finger exoskeleton:

Distal interphalangeal joint 0-60°

Proximal interphalangeal joint 0-90°

Metacarpalphalangeal joint 0-90°

Can be adjusted for different finger dimensions

IP Rights
German patent application (07/2007)

Origin
Technische Universität Berlin
