New laser system for high frequency measurement techniques

Lasers with a low jitter and adjustable repetition rates are needed for several measurement techniques. But state of the art laser systems either suffer from restrictions to district or only very poor adjustable repetition rates or a cw background intensity, depending in the system used.

The presented technology copes with both problems. It is able to deliver laser pulses with sub-picosecond timing jitter and, upon nonlinear compression in comb-like dispersion profiled fiber (CDPF), pulse width below 500 fs (FWHM) without the problem of cw background intensity. Furthermore a high signal-to-noise ratio, and/or discrete repetition rates which are adjustable in a wide range can be achieved. The synchronisation to a radio frequency clock signal allows a wide frequency range.
