PPARgamma ligands induce foetal lung maturation

PPARgamma ligands are presented as medicaments which induce foetal lung maturation for the sake of prevention or treatment of respiratory distress syndrome in premature infants. Presently, lung maturity is medically induced by antenatal administration of corticosteroids. Unfortunately, this treatment may have long-term negative effects on the developing organism as animal and epidemiological data show. A replacement of this treatment by a comparably potent therapy with lower risks – alternatively a combination of both – would be of significant clinical benefit. Investigations of pioglitazone in rats now show the surprising potential of PPARgamma ligands to induce foetal lung maturity.
