EMBO Award for Communication in the Life Sciences

This year for the first time EMBO will award Euro 5 000 and a silver medal for outstanding works of public communication in the life sciences. Eligible are practising scientists working in research in Europe or Israel.

EMBO recognises the huge efforts that some scientists make to communicate their science to the public while remaining active in research, says Andrew Moore, Manager for EMBOs Science and Society Programme. Communicating successfully with a non-scientific audience is very different from talking to colleagues: It is a skill that needs to be promoted.

There are no limitations to the form of communication. The jury particularly looks for imaginative and original works. These can include communication via printed and electronic media, Radio, Television, out-reach, schools projects, talks in public and other special initiatives. There is one winning application annually. A prize of Euro 5.000 and a silver medal will be awarded on November 9, 2002 during European Science and Technology Week as part of the EMBL/EMBO joint conference on Science & Society in Heidelberg.

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) was established in 1964, by leading scientists in the field. The aim of the organization is to promote molecular biology studies in Europe. Subsidiary to that general aim are concepts such as the development of a strong trans-national approach to molecular biology, the identification of measures that can assist in the training of scientists in this area and the emphasis on scientific criteria for all of its activities.
