ICE Conference 2012

The “18th International Conference on Engineering, Technology and Innovation” (ICE) was held from 18 to 20 June. The conference, organised by the Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship (SCE) together with the Munich University of Applied Sciences (MUAS) and the Center for Technology and Innovation Management (CeTIM), welcomed over 200 leading researchers, practitioners and decisionmakers from around the world to the Munich University of Applied Sciences.

Under the motto “Innovation by collaboration and entrepreneurial partnerships”, the latest research findings from the fields of innovation and technology management, engineering, entrepreneurship as well as virtual enterprises were presented and discussed in an interdisciplinary setting during the three-day conference. In addition, the conference also provided the opportunity for networking on an international level as well as the signing of a cooperation agreement among universities in Munich.

“We are pleased to host this year’s ICE Conference together with the Munich University of Applied Sciences and CeTIM and that our motto “Innovation by collaboration and entrepreneurial partnerships” was well received,” said Prof. Klaus Sailer, CEO of the Strascheg Center and co-host. “The ICE is an excellent forum for exchanging ideas on the latest research findings in the areas of innovations and technology management. It also offers the opportunity for networking among international elite experts. In this spirit, the conference represents a further step in establishing our research network in Munich within the international research community.”

To kick off the conference on 18 June, Dieter Reiter, Head of the Department for Economy and Labour of the City of Munich, welcomed the guests during an official reception held by the City of Munich in the Historical Ballroom of the Old City Hall. The conference was also supported by the two leading international professional associations for technology management, IEEE and IAMOT, whose respective presidents, Luke Maki and Prof. Dr. Tarek Khalil, also welcomed the conference participants.

During the networking dinner on 19 June, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Bundeswehr University of Munich (UniBW), the Munich University of Applied Sciences (MUAS) and their associated institutes, the Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship (SCE) and the Center for Technology and Innovation Management (CeTIM). The four institutions have agreed to further intensify their existing longterm collaboration within the scope of the ‘4Entrepreneurship’ initiative made up of the four Munich universities. The objective of the cooperation is to facilitate mutual access to research and entrepreneurship networks as well as to establish a competence centre for innovation management and entrepreneurship in the Munich area. Within the scope of the 4Entrepreneurship initiative, CeTIM and SCE together with the entrepreneurship centres of the Ludwig Maximilian University (LMU EC) and the Technical University of Munich (unternehmerTUM) are currently conducting joint projects such as the Global Entrepreneurship Summer School (http://www.globalsummerschool.org), and together they run the Social Entrepreneurship Academy (http://www.seakademie.de). In addition, UniBW/CeTIM and MUAS/SCE are also re-search partners and conduct a joint doctoral program.

The conference concluded on 20 June with a policy dialogue on the topic of “Innovation Ecosystems and their Future”. Renowned panellists discussed current topics and future scenarios in the development of innovations and entrepreneurship together with conference participants. The panel included Sergio Arzeni, Director of the Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs and Local Development of the OECD; Jean-Pierre Euzen, Head of the Living Labs Unit of the European Commission and Prof. Dr Roumen Nikolov from FIPPP Network for Innovation Systems. Apart from participants from around the world, Gabriele Böhmer, Head of Entrepreneurship Activities and Economic Development of the City of Munich; Prof. Dr Dietmar Harhoff, entrepreneurship expert from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Mu-nich, and the President of the Munich University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr Michael Kortstock, also took part in the interactive discussion.
