Fully automated from production to the customer

Siemens Industry Solutions has built a new export warehouse for Henkel Central Eastern Europe (CEE) at its production site in Vienna, Austria. The goods produced are forwarded directly to Henkel's central warehouse and its locations in Eastern Europe.

The objective of the new construction project was to increase the handling rate and the storage capacity to match the increased production rate. Siemens designed a highly dynamic channel warehouse, supplied the steel and rack structures, the entire material handling, control and IT equipment, as well as the automated truck loading systems. The design was based on the Siemens Logition intralogistics solution.

Henkel CEE has a fully automated, highly dynamic export warehouse built in Vienna, which will forward the goods it produces more quickly and efficiently to both its central warehouse in Vienna and to the decentralized warehouse systems in Eastern Europe. Round-the-clock, all the production lines transport the palletized, wrapped goods along automated conveyor systems from the production facility into the new export channel warehouse.

The pallets are sorted there according to their export destinations and specific truck transport requirements. Two slip-chain loaders load the pallets directly onto the shuttle trucks, which carry them the twelve kilometers to the CEE central warehouse. A semitrailer can be completely loaded in just three minutes.

The export warehouse has three loading gates specifically for loading pallets bound for destinations in Eastern Europe. The pallets for the first three scheduled country trucks are automatically made ready on a total of eleven gravity-type roller conveyors. During the docking and loading time, the loading carriers are temporarily stored in a highly dynamic channel warehouse, by means of energy-efficient belt elevators with counterweights, ready to carry further pallets destined for East European countries and for the central warehouse. The warehouse has five levels lying directly above the loading level, and acts as a buffer.

The material flow is distributed between parallel routes to make it fail-safe. During the night and during interruptions to loading operations, 1,500 euro pallets can be stored by destination on five levels. Five battery-powered pallet trolleys are used for this purpose. They communicate with the
vehicle control system via data radio, and are loaded by the storage and retrieval machines. The staging zones for the semitrailers and the slip-chain loading can be supplied with pallets from all levels at all times. The noise emissions are so low that one hardly notices that the biggest production output of detergents and cleansers in Austria is being loaded in this compact

warehouse system. The Logition WMS (Warehouse Management System) and the Logition CCS (Conveyor Control System) transport management system, based on Simatic S7 components, are integrated to ensure that both the production and the loading run optimally.

Henkel CEE has its headquarters in Vienna, and is one of the most successful companies selling brand-name goods in Central Europe. The company is the market leader in hair cosmetics, adhesives, and surface treatment, and also holds a top position in brand-name detergents, cleansers and cosmetics. In Vienna, it has one of the most modern detergent production plants.
