As one of the highlights at Medica 2011, Siemens Healthcare will present products and solutions that help streamline workflows in practices and hospitals. For example, state-ofthe- art angiography systems help the doctor make an accurate and fast diagnosis, and allow treatment methods, such as in hybrid operating (OR) rooms, that are gentle on the patient.

Siemens will present these and other solutions in this field at the trade fair in Duesseldorf. In addition, the focus is on breast care solutions – technologies for diagnosing and treating breast cancer that can be combined with information technology to form a comprehensive solution. The exhibits at the show also include ultrasound systems for various applications and consulting models for clinical processes in oncology.

At Medica 2011, Siemens will highlight hybrid operations amongst other feature topics. New operating procedures such as transcatheter heart valve implantation open up new therapeutic options, for example for patients who would not survive open-heart surgery. As the number of application areas increases, so too does the number of hybrid ORs, a synthesis of surgical OR and catheter lab. They combine traditional OR equipment with a complete angiography system. To allow the interdisciplinary medical team to work together efficiently, it must have technology that not only delivers high-quality images, but is also extremely flexible. With the Artis zeego, Siemens will present its most advanced angiography system at Medica 2011. By combining a C-arm with a powerful industrial robot, it provides the physician with virtually unlimited freedom of movement. Depending on its application, the Artis zeego can be equipped with different operating tables. While the Siemens booth is presenting it with a conventional Artis OR table, the booth of the company Cadolto (Hall 13, Booth A 10) features it for the first time with an integrated Magnus table as part of a fully equipped hybrid OR module. Thanks to its extremely flexible table, this combination makes the angiography system suitable for multidisciplinary uses as well as for operations that require the patient to be held in special positions.

Multiple methods for precise and effective breast cancer diagnostics and therapy

Siemens Healthcare has developed a wide range of solutions for early detection and treatment of breast cancer, combining it under the name “Breast Care Solutions”. They comprise various imaging procedures such as ultrasound, mammography and MRI, which are supplemented by information technology, lab diagnostics and radiation therapy solutions. They are used not only in practices and hospitals, but also in mobile screening units. These so-called mammography trailers are set up like an examination room. At the Medica trade show, Siemens will present the concept and the equipment options for mammography trailers, including the Mammomat Inspiration digital mammography system or the satellite-based transmission of examination data directly from the trailer to a breast center for diagnostic purposes. Mammography is increasingly becoming threedimensional: With imaging technology similar to that of a CT scan, 3D breast tomosynthesis expands traditional two-dimensional systems by creating three-dimensional images. This prevents overlapping projections of the breast tissue. The Acuson S2000 Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS) from Siemens also acquires volume images of the female breast. With the Magnetom Espree-Pink, on the other hand, Siemens offers a dedicated breast MRI scanner. The images from all these systems can be displayed on the Syngo MammoReport, a multimodal workstation for breast care. This means that for the first time 3D tomosynthesis, 3D ultrasound images and MRI scans can be diagnosed together on a single workstation. With special configurations and the optional use of computer-aided detection (CAD), the Syngo MammoReport also helps to handle high screening throughput.

To increase breast cancer awareness especially for the importance of early detection in the general public, Siemens launched the “Turn your city pink!” campaign in October 2011. Trade fair visitors can support the campaign by having their picture taken at the Siemens booth. The picture will then be printed out as a postcard, which invites to participate in the breast cancer campaign. The postcard can be addressed and mailed on the spot. Siemens will take care of the postage and thus help spread the visitors’ messages.

Siemens donates ultrasound systems to “Doctors of the World”

In addition to breast care systems, Siemens will also present ultrasound equipment for other applications. Visitors can learn more about the Acuson S2000 premium ultrasound platform, the mid-range Acuson X300 system or the Acuson X150. Because of its flexibility and compact design, the latter is part of a donation campaign set up by Siemens Healthcare: For every fifty Siemens ultrasound systems sold between October 1 and December 31, 2011, the company will donate one Acuson X150 to the humanitarian organization “Doctors of the World”. This international network helps people in crisis situations with 356 health programs in 78 countries all over the world.

Besides providing help in emergencies, “Doctors of the World” focuses on finding sustainable solutions to long-term crises or in underdeveloped regions. Before the donated ultrasound systems are being provided for such projects the doctors in charge are trained on the systems by Siemens. The first Acuson X150 will be used in the Ukraine to provide medical care to refugees and migrants without health insurance. It is expected that the first system will be handed over to “Doctors of the World” at Medica 2011. During the campaign, which is running under the slogan “Zero percent that set a lot in motion”, customers can purchase ultrasound equipment with zero-percent financing.
